Gordon F. Currie - Biography

Gordon was raised in Victoria, British Columbia on the beautiful Pacific Northwest. One of the many wonderful places that Gordon visited as a youth included Piers Island, the interior of Vancouver Island including Parksville, Cowichan Bay, Chemainus, Vernon Lake, Gold River. Time was also spent on the westcoast in Tofino and Uculet.

The Currie family owned a number of original watercolor and oil paintings over the years including two Harry Heine paintings from the Comox Valley. A number of family members paint in Gordon's family including his father John Currie and brother David Currie. David recently received a great deal of interest for his abstract work currently on display in Whistler, BC.

In 1980, Gordon moved to the northeastern part of the province of BC and is residing in Dawson Creek, in the beautiful peace region. Surrounded by rolling hills, wheat and canola fields, the Rocky Mountains are just a hours drive west. Travelling around the province has allowed Gordon to photograph and paint the wonders of our province. Travel with business also took Gordon all over the US and many hours were spent working in California (San Francisco, Berkeley, Newport Beach).

When Gordon isn't painting, he works fulltime as CEO of his own marketing company (Eldoren Consulting Inc). In the past, Gordon has worked as a professional firefighter, financial planner in the investment industry and with the RCMP (police dispatcher). He is happily married to Suzanne and has 3 children (Alysha, Alyssa and David). And we can't forget his beloved cat, Mysty. The family currently owns a large log cabin on Moberly Lake, BC and many weekends are spent painting "plein air" on the cabin deck near the water.

Artist’s statement

"One of life's greatest treasures is color and our ability to record nature and all that is around us. I have become addicted to recording what I see, smell and what's unique about the environment.

I grew up on the British Columbia coast and absolutely love BC for all it has to offer. My family on my father and mother's side comes from Scotland. Much of the painting I have painted over the past months were heavily influenced by European architecture and Gardens, another subject I enjoy painting. My paintings range from colorful gardens and buildings to space themes (acrylic paintings) and abstract. Patterns and textures fascinate me. I have also incorporated pen and ink technique in much of my work.

All of my paintings have a message or underlying theme. It might be feelings illicited from an old wooden barn and rustic wood to the warm of the sun on a backyard garden. I paint primarily from images I have seen but more and more I find as I develop my skills I paint from feelings, dreams and clear images in my head. You will find that I don't always paint images to sell. Although my work is starting to circulate, my paintings are painted for me and for the pleasure of those who are facinated by the composition and light in my work.

Many artists fall in love with their own work and I guess I am no different. I can sense when I start to paint if the work is going to come together. I see the final image clearly in my own head and get excited as it develops. After the work is completed, I spend a few days looking at it and taking in what I have created. I rarely sign the work until at least a week or two later. It's a sense of closure when I sign and hand of my work. I would like to say that painting isn't emotional and that I see my work simply as paper and paint....but that wouldn't be the case. My heart and feelings are wrapped up in my work and I hope I can share these feelings with those who view my paintings"
